How to Start Your Life Story When You Don’t Know Where to Begin

LifeSketch by Brett Allen

Brett Allen is the creator of LifeSketch, a storytelling platform designed to help normal people—not “writers”—turn their life stories into real, finished books.

He’s spent decades working in training, marketing, and product design, always circling the same problem: smart people with meaningful stories get stuck when the medium is too hard, too intimidating, or too blank. LifeSketch grew out of that frustration—and out of his own attempt to capture family stories before they disappeared.

Brett’s work sits at the crossroads of:

  • Story structure (Joseph Campbell, memoir, narrative craft)

  • Behavior change (why people don’t finish creative projects)

  • And practical AI (used as a tool, not a magic wand

He doesn’t believe most people fail to write because they’re lazy or untalented. He believes they fail because the process is backwards. Stories are spoken before they’re written. LifeSketch is built around that idea.

When he’s not building software or teaching people how to capture their stories, he’s thinking about memory, meaning, legacy—and why the smallest moments end up being the ones that matter....and pickleball. 🏓
